VINTAGE T-SHIRTS
It seems fitting this will go down as my “first love” post since it was a vintage t-shirt that inspired the name for my business. I grew up in the 80s where it was de riguer to get your name in flocked letters on the back of a raglan t-shirt with a shiny decal of something like Michael Jackson or Kermit the Frog on the front. What a great form of personal self expression it was!
You can tell a lot about a person by what they have on their t-shirt.
A well worn in vintage tee is a one off in a world of mass-produced goods. And there is something truly satisfying about keeping a good t-shirt going in perpetuity.
For the bulk of my career this is what I did - I created graphic t-shirts. Probably the most fun part of what I did was to shop in NY, LA, and travel abroad for inspiration. One time, after a lot of digging I remember finding a yellow 1970s NY Cosmos t-shirt in really mint condition. I felt like I had found a unicorn! Now today you can buy this sort of thing billed as retro- but it’s just not the same.
I realize now, as I get older that the t-shirts of my youth are now considered vintage. I guess a benefit of being a bit of a pack rat is that I have kept heaps of my old clothes for my daughters, saving them countless trips to the thrift shops.
